Over 50k motorists caught for drunk driving in Hyderabad so far this year

The police reported that between August 24 and November 21, a total of 13,933 motorists were booked for driving under the influence. During this period, 13,188 charge sheets were filed in various courts, leading to prosecutions. Additionally, 824 drunk drivers were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 1 to 10 days, while 227 others were ordered to complete 2 days of social service.

Hyderabad: As many as 52,080 motorists were caught and booked for drunk driving during the special drives conducted by the Hyderabad Traffic Police at various spots across the city this year until now.

According to the police, during the last three months between August 24 and November 21, a total of 13,933 motorists were booked for driving the vehicles in a drunken state and 13,188 charge sheets have been filed in various courts and prosecuted.

In the last three months, about 824 drunk drivers have been sentenced to imprisonment for a period ranging from 1 to 10 days and 227 drunk drivers have been sentenced to do social service for 2 days.

Further, 99 driving licences were also suspended for a period of 2 to 6 months by the Regional Transport Authorities on the orders of courts. The courts also have imposed a total fine of Rs 2.80 crore on all the violators during this period.

During the special drive on November 9, 327 drunk drivers were caught and cases were booked against them under section 185 of M.V. Act. On a single day on October 4, about 44 drunk drivers were sentenced to jail for a maximum period of 4 days and the minimum being 2 days.

Of the drunk drivers caught in last 3 months, maximum caught were the two-wheeler drivers i.e. 11,904 (85 per cent). The drunk drivers were also counseled at the Traffic Training Institutes of Goshamahal and Begumpet in the presence of their family members.

“The motorists should remember that alcohol hampers their vision due to dizziness and it also dampens fear and incite humans to take risks. All these factors while driving result in accidents and many a times it proves fatal,” said. P Viswa Prasad, Additional Commissioner (Traffic), Hyderabad. The driving licences of repeat violators will be suspended by the RTO for a period of 3 months and above or permanently, he added.
